The DISCO-TECA project is a queer-inspired academic-performative project which started with workshops and lectures, and culminated in a dance performance by the Chinese dance group ErGao Performance. Hosted by Ibsen International, it has been performed more than 20 times in China and internationally since 2015.
Chair and organizer:
Elisabeth Lund Engebretsen (associate professor of gender studies, University of Stavanger) gives a brief introduction to queer issues in contemporary China.
Fabrizio Massini (Artistic Director, Ibsen International) introduces the DISCO-TECA program and discusses the international appeal and reception of gender and queer arts through the Ibsen International arts and culture platform.
Wang Qian (Researcher, Sichuan University, China; cultural consultant for DISCO-TECA since 2015) explores how the dance-theatre performance DISCO-TECA fuses academic research, stage craft, and offstage activity together in queer ways. He also traces the queer and «carnivalesque» of Chinese Disco culture, from the 1980s to the 2010s.
Translation: We aim to be able to offer whisper translation English-Norwegian for the presentations. Chinese translation by the participants upon request.
Resources: There will be a book display of relevant publications by the three participants at the event.
