TransBalkan - a visual journey
Meet the Serbia/Belgrade based artist Aleksandar Crnogorac and listen to his passionate talk about his project ”TransBalkan”.
TransBalkan is a photographic documentary project which focuses on the transgender community in the Balkan region in South-East Europe. Alexandar's exhibition is part of his groundbraking project in Pride Art, and in this talk he will share some of his experiences travelling thorugh the ex-Yugoslavian republics including Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia. Here, he met around 35 different transgender people from the age 17 to 85, with whom he conducted interviews and photographed.
The purpose of this project is to help raise visibility for the transgender community, so often discriminated against and misrepresented in this corner of Europe, which we know unfortunately lags behind the rest of Europe when it comes to tolerance and openness.
Next to each portrait in the exhibition, he presents a biographical text about about each person photographed in addition to direct quotations from each individual on the transgender community, their life conditions or their personal goals and visions for the future.
