Turkey: Bring back the rainbow!
This programme item will be held in English.
This is the first Pride season after Turkey’s state of emergency officially ended on 18 July 2018. But Turkey is far from normal. Many of the measures introduced during the state of emergency in Turkey remain in force and continue to have a profound and devastating impact on public life.
The LGBTI community is one of the groups that has been targeted to crack down on dissent and maintain a climate of fear. But amazing people continue to act with perseverance and courage. At this Pride House event, Melika Balkan from Middle East Technical University (METU) LGBTI Solidarity Group and Damla Umut Uzun from KAOS GL will speak about the ongoing struggle for freedom of expression, association and the right to peaceful assembly in Turkey. The two LGBTI-activists from Ankara will present the status quo of LGBTI+ rights and activism in Turkey and discuss what has to be done to improve the situation.
This event is part of the Oslo International Pride Program and will be held in English.
Patricia Kaatee from Amnesty International in Norway will moderate the talks.
