Rebuilding Hope: Queer Activism in Syria
As Syria undergoes political change, what does the future hold for democracy, human rights, and the protection of marginalized communities, including LGBTIQ+ people? How can the international community support young activists and ensure that equality and inclusion remain central to rebuilding efforts?
In collaboration with the Embassy to Canada in Norway, Skeiv Verden is hosting a panel discussion as part of Oslo Pride to explore the challenges and possibilities facing LGBTIQ+ individuals in a new political landscape in Syria and the neighboring countries.
The conversation will address the impact of global political shifts, conflicts, and increasing threats to LGBTIQ+ rights on Syria and the Middle East. We will hear from François, one of the founding members of Syria’s first LGBTIQ+ organization, which has been coordinating efforts to support queer Syrians both within the country and in the global diaspora. The discussion will also highlight the role of international solidarity in protecting and amplifying the voices of vulnerable communities.
This conversation is an opportunity to learn from those on the ground, explore the intersections of political change and human rights, and strategize ways to strengthen global support for LGBTIQ+ communities in Syria and beyond.
