Handlingen i Puccinis Tosca er hentet fra skuespillet La Tosca fra 1887 av franskmannen Victorien Sardou, og bearbeidet til opera-
libretto av Luigi Illica og Giuseppe Giacosa.

Premieren, på Teatro Costanzi i Roma 14. januar 1900, var hundre år etter tidspunktet for handlingen. Handlingen foregår i Roma, fra midt på dagen 17. juni 1800 til tidlig på morgenen dagen etter. Første akt er i kirken Sant’ Andrea della valle, hvor maleren Mario Cavaradossi hjelper motstandsmannen Angelotti til å gjemme seg for pavens politiagenter. Cavaradossi har også et møte med sin elskede, sangerinnen Floria Tosca. Den onde politisjefen baron Scarpia bruker Toscas sjalusi i sitt spill, og skjønner at Cavaradossi har hjulpet fienden.

Andre akt foregår i politikontorene i Palazzo Farnese, hvor Cavaradossi blir torturert. Mot løfte om å gå til sengs med Scarpia, får Tosca papirer som vil hjelpe Cavaradossi og henne selv ut av byen. Da Scarpia gjør tilnærmelser stikker hun ham ned og dreper ham.

I tredje akt, på toppen av festningen Engelsborg, har Cavaradossi fått dødsdommen. Scarpia har lovet Tosca at henrettelsen kun skal være teater. Men den er ekte nok. Cavaradossi er død. Tosca tar sitt liv ved å hoppe utfor muren.

About the opera

The plot of Puccini's Tosca is taken from the play La Tosca from 1887 by the Frenchman Victorien Sardou, and adapted into an opera libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa.

The premiere, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on January 14, 1900, was a hundred years after the time of the action. The action takes place in Rome, from midday on June 17, 1800 to early morning the next day. The first act is in the church of Sant' Andrea della Valle, where the painter Mario Cavaradossi helps the resistance fighter Angelotti to hide from the Pope's police agents. Cavaradossi also has a meeting with his beloved, the singer Floria Tosca. The evil police chief Baron Scarpia uses Tosca's jealousy in his game, and realizes that Cavaradossi has helped the enemy.

The second act takes place in the police offices in Palazzo Farnese, where Cavaradossi is tortured. In exchange for a promise to sleep with Scarpia, Tosca gets papers that will help Cavaradossi and herself out of town. When Scarpia makes advances, she stabs him and kills him.

In the third act, on top of the Engelsborg fortress, Cavaradossi has been sentenced to death. Scarpia has promised Tosca that the execution will only be theatrical. But it is real enough. Cavaradossi is dead. Tosca takes her own life by jumping off the wall.
